UHAS gets first-ever Emeritus Professor in history

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) approves the first-ever Emeritus Professor according to the history of the university.

Professor Fred Newton Binka was approved by the University Council at its meeting dated December 15, 2023.

The Council approved the appointment of the Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho.

Education profile

• Professor Fred Newton Binka was born in Ghana. He acquired his medical degree (MB ChB) from the University of Ghana in 1978. He studied in the area of Community Health for his degree.
• In 1987, he obtained his Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
• In 1990, Prof. Fred Binka secured a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
• After seven (7) years, in 1997, he obtained a PhD in epidemiology and population sciences from the University of Basel.

Profile/Background of Professor Fred Newton Binka

• Previously, Professor Fred Newton Binka was the Coordinator of the WHO Emergency Response to Artemisinin Resistance in the Greater Mekong sub-region of Asia.
• He was the Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, established by the Government of Ghana in March 2012.

Offices/Positions held & Experience

• Professor Fred Ninka served as Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Ghana.
• He worked with the Ministry of Health in Ghana for over two (2) decades. During that period, he inaugurated the internationally acclaimed Navrongo Health Research Centre, where he conducted several large-scale intervention studies including the Insecticide-treated Bednets study in Ghana.
• Prof. Fred Binka also founded the Indepth-Network, made up of 54 field sites in 24 developing countries in Africa and Asia.

• Prof. Fred Binka served on more than a dozen WHO expert committees and panels, was Chair of the GAVI Independent Review committee for 4 years, and member of the Malaria Advisory Committee (MPAC).
• He is a Trustee of several International NGOs working on Health especially malaria, such as Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC) and Malaria Consortium based in the United Kingdom.
• He is a member of the Board of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), Seoul, Korea, and a member of the past Council of the Ghana Health Service, Ministry of Health Ghana.

Awards Prof. Fred Binka received

• Prof. Fred Binka received (the first Recipient) Rudolf Geigy Award 2001 from the R. Geigy Foundation.
• He received the Ronald Ross Medal in 2010 from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for his work on malaria.
• He received an Honorary Fellowship from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2015).
• He also received the national award of The Officer of the Order of the Volta (OV), from the President of Ghana.
• His capacity development efforts also led to the Dr. Pascoal Moccumbi award by EDCTP in 2016.
