University of Education, Winneba Lecturer wins £23,000.00 grant from ESRC

Dr. Benedict Arko, a lecturer at the Department of Geography Education at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has won a grant of £23,000.00 from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK’s largest funder of economic, social, behavioural, and human data science.

The grant was awarded in collaboration with Dr. Daniel Kyereko of the Department of Education at the University of York in the UK, and was put towards the project “Inclusion and Marginalisation in Ghanaian Schools,” which sought to support the rights of migrant children, particularly girls, and advocate for their participation in Ghana’s educational system.

The impact-generating activities of the project included a documentary, stakeholder engagement, workshops, a blog, and policy briefs, among others.

Dr. Arko was instrumental in the planning and execution of the project, making a strong case for the use of UEW as a “one-stop shop” for reaching key stakeholders, coordinating the work of all human resources involved, and leading a workshop at UEW to discuss the difficulties migrant children experience in accessing education.
