The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has signed a partnership agreement with the University of Massachusetts, USA, aimed at advancing the educational and energy sectors in Africa. The umbrella tree planted at the South Campus of UEW was used to signify the partnership.
The partnership was spearheaded by Mr. Gordon Donkoh-Halm, founder and Executive Director of the African Community Center of Lowell. Mr. Donkoh-Halm, who is a native of Effutu, expressed his enthusiasm for the growth of Winneba and his desire to connect the UEW with the University of Massachusetts.
The partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of students and faculty between the two universities for teaching, learning, and collaborative exchanges.
It will also focus on addressing the challenges of energy acuity and making energy accessible to everyone while being responsible for global warming.
Professor Robert Giles, the Director of the Haiti Development Studies Center and Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, expressed his desire to create a global energy program with the help of his UEW colleagues and organizations in Africa and other continents.
He also plans to bring science and engineering students to Ghana to work with UEW on global energy challenges.
UEW’s Dean of the Faculty of Science Education, Prof. Victus Samlafo, was optimistic about the collaboration and its potential to increase student and faculty mobility between the two universities.
