APPOINTMENT OF PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR (ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS)

THE POSITION EXPECTATIONS
The Pro Vice-Chancellor – Academic and Student Affairs will participate fully in the leadership of UPSA as a member of the University Leadership Team and will work with the wider UPSA community other senior colleagues to ensure the performance of Faculties and University in line with the strategic plan. Specifically, the role:
1. Develops and reviews policies related to academic and student affairs;
2. Promotes a learning-centered educational environment, placing educational excellence and student success at the forefront in institutional planning and policy development.
3. Provides leadership on curricular and instructional issues, and coordinates distance learning and instructional technology to ensure systems are current and practices are effective.
4. Interprets and communicates regulations impacting curriculum, and makes recommendations regarding programmes, standards and policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
5. Initiates long-range planning and research to support the development and review of instructional programmes in accordance with student needs and the needs of business and industry and in accordance with GTEC regulations.
6. Creation of strong relationships with students and student organisations to ensure that programmes and services are student-centered, mission-driven, and responsive to new challenges and opportunities.
7. Builds an environment that explores and implements emerging practices in higher education and student affairs.
8. Provides leadership in the development, implementation, monitoring and review of policies, systems and procedures affecting academic and student matters of the University.
9. Oversees academic planning, curriculum development and review of teaching and learning programmes in pursuance of the strategic objectives of the University.

THE PERSON
• A candidate seeking appointment as Pro Vice-Chancellor must:
Be of professorial status in a University or an analogous institution.
• Demonstrate successful leadership experience in higher education administration, and experience in leading and managing a large, complex organisation in a challenging financial environment.
• Possess a record of excellence in teaching, research, and service activities at a university.
• Be visionary, business-oriented and be able to establish rapport between industry, the community and the University for the promotion of common purpose.
• Have proven leadership, management and communication skills on a senior management level.
• Have the capacity and network to raise funds and other resources for research and other developmental activities of the University.
• Be sober with maturity and drive for sound and impartial judgement.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
• The Pro Vice-Chancellor shall be appointed for a period of three (3) years.
• The appointment may be renewed, upon application for a further term of up to three (3) years only, if that is not beyond the statutory retirement age of sixty (60) years.
• Applicants should be able to complete one full term prior to attaining the statutory retirement age.
APPOINTMENT OF PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR (RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER)

UPSA invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for this exciting leadership opportunity. The post of PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR of the University will become vacant on January 1, 2025.

THE POSITION EXPECTATIONS
The Pro Vice-Chancellor – Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer (RIKT) will participate fully in the leadership of UPSA as a member of the University Leadership Team and will work with the wider UPSA community and other senior colleagues to ensure the performance of Faculties and University in line with the strategic plan. Specifically, the role will:
1. Oversee all aspects of research, including postgraduate research, grant capture, research partnerships and research excellence.
2. Build strong, sustained and impactful external networks to support UPSA’s research and knowledge exchange strategies.
3. Provide strategic and operational leadership for the continued development of a high performing and quality research, and knowledge exchange culture which supports UPSA Strategic Plan and Mission.
4. Provide senior leadership that promotes a culture of excellence, including collaboration with Deans to ensure motivational leadership, management and development of the faculties and the senior teams within them.
5. Work with the University Executive Team, to play a key role in the generation of research and knowledge exchange income to meet the university’s KPIs, including Intellectual Property (IP) and commercialisation.
6. Help drive improvements in research quality, intensity, and impact, energising, engaging and working with the university’s researchers, research leadership and colleagues across UPSA. Maximise the university’s outcomes in future research assessment exercises, impact and income from grants and government funding for knowledge.
7. Help drive improvements in the university’s knowledge exchange/transfer activity
8. Actively pursue external funding and development opportunities, working with colleagues across UPSA to enhance provision and facilities for research and knowledge exchange, and to support and enable specific research and knowledge exchange projects.
9. Contribute to the maintenance of academic standards and support the delivery of enhancements to governance, ethics and standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
