The Pre-tertiary Teacher Unions are calling on government through stakeholders in education thus; Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service to immediately order for closure of schools cross the country.

According to the angry Teacher Unions namely; Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers -Ghana (CCT-GH) and Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU), the vulnerable final year students are the preys to the novel coronavirus at a point where the virus is abnormally increasing and invading schools.

The teacher unions are worried over government’s entrenched position to close schools in the midst of the surging coronavirus cases. They added that, it appears government has a different motive on reopening of schools at the time government institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, the Bulk Oil Storage and Transport Company Ltd (BOST), the Ghana Grid Company (GridCo) and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) among many have either being partially or totally closed down for the negative impact the coronavirus has on them.

In the joint press statement, the teacher unions noted that, government has failed to supply adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to schools to help enforce the Covid-19 protocols effectively as promised.

They are worried because, counties like Nigeria has suspended WASSCE and BECE due to the coronavirus while Isreal has closed down schools again at the time the confirmed cases keep increasing.
