Zenith Bank Ghana leads as headline sponsor of the 2022 WAEC distinction awards ceremony

Zenith Bank (Ghana) Limited has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to promoting educational excellence in Ghana.

The bank proudly sponsored the award for the Overall Best Candidate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations for School Candidates in 2022, marking the third consecutive year of their support.

The prestigious event, known as the WAEC Distinction Awards ceremony, was organized by the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The ceremony took place on June 22, 2023, at the Sakyi-Asare Menako Hall in Cantonments, Accra.

During the event, Mr. Henry Onwuzurigbo, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank, presented the Overall Best Candidate award to Alex Opoku Manu, a former student of St. James Seminary Senior High School in Sunyani. In recognition of his outstanding achievement, Alex received a cash prize of GHS 30,000 and a laptop.

Mr. Onwuzurigbo highlighted that Alex’s remarkable academic performance serves as a testament to his extraordinary abilities. He emphasized that Zenith Bank’s continuous sponsorship of the Overall Best Candidate award aligns with the bank’s mission, which is to invest in the best people, technology, and environment to emphasize their commitment to customer satisfaction.

Currently pursuing Human Biology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Alex also received a cash prize and a certificate from the WAEC Endowment. Additionally, St. James Seminary Senior High School, Alex’s alma mater, received a plaque to commemorate their contribution to his success.

In addition to Alex, the second-place winner, Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey, and the third-place winner, Abena Afriyie Poku, both former students of St. James Seminary SHS and Holy Child Senior High School, respectively, were also recognized for their exceptional performance. They each received a cash prize, a laptop, and a certificate.

Wendy Addy-Lamptey, the Head of the National Office at WAEC, expressed her gratitude to Zenith Bank Ghana and other organizations for their involvement in rewarding excellence. She explained that the Excellence and Distinction Awards were established by the WAEC Endowment Fund to acknowledge candidates who excel in the Council’s International and National examinations.

Furthermore, she proudly announced that Alex Opoku Manu and Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey secured the first and second prizes, respectively, at the WAEC International Excellence Awards during the 71st Annual Council Meeting held in Banjul, The Gambia.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister, extended his congratulations to the winners for their outstanding achievements. He praised WAEC for organizing the awards and encouraged school authorities to prioritize the development of critical thinking skills among students.

Zenith Bank has consistently made significant contributions to supporting academically gifted students in Ghana across all educational levels. The bank currently offers comprehensive educational scholarships that cover tuition fees, books, clothing, accommodation, and allowances for underprivileged students.

Beneficiary schools include Achimota Senior High School, Achimota Junior High School, Osu Presbyterian Senior High School, and Kibi School for the Deaf. Recently, the bank extended its scholarship program to an eight-year-old student, enabling her to pursue her education at St. Peters Missions School in Accra.

Throughout its nearly eighteen years of operation in Ghana, Zenith Bank has sponsored specific prize categories in schools and tertiary institutions.
