44,000 trained teachers failed Licensure Examination – NTC

Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, the Registrar for the National Teaching Council (NTC) has disclosed that, a total of 44,000 trained teachers/graduate teachers have failed their Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE).
Speaking at the 2022/2023 Cohort- Leading Girls’ Learning Programme town hall meeting, a programme which was organised by the Institute of Teacher Education and Development (INTED), Dr. Addai-Opoku disclosed that a total of 120,000 newly trained teacher sat for their Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) but out of the above-stated figure, 76,000 passed and 44,000 performed poorly per the statistics they have.
He added saying, the outcome of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination is worrying and an indication that the said teachers cannot handle children since they (the teachers) cannot pass exams about handling school children as expected of them.
The purpose of the exams is to enable qualified persons who are teachers to acquire a license for their profession and prepare themselves adequately for the demands of National Teachers’ Standard (NTS).
The standard entails having the necessary knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that a professional teacher must possess before entrusting a classroom under her/his care for effective lesson delivery and shaping the children as a whole.
