Akufo-Addo asks parliament to halt transmission of bill to his office

In response to the passing of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, the Office of the President has formally requested Parliament to halt the forwarding of the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill, commonly known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, for President Akufo-Addo’s approval.
The decision comes in response to two (2) pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunction filed in the Supreme Court. The bill, which has sparked intense public discourse and polarized opinions across the nation, aimed to address issues surrounding human sexual rights and uphold traditional Ghanaian family values. However, its progress has hit a temporary roadblock due to the legal challenges brought forth by concerned parties.

In a letter dated March 18, 2024, addressed to Parliament and signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, the Executive Secretary to the President, revealed that the Attorney-General had written to President Akufo-Addo, that he had been served with both applications related to the bill. The applications, Dr. Amanda Odoi v. The Speaker of Parliament and The Attorney-General (31/13/2023) and Richard Sky v. The Parliament of Ghana and The Attorney-General (11/9/2024),
The Attorney-General advised the President “not to take any step in relation to the Bill until the matters raised by the suits are determined by the Supreme Court.” The letter further requested that Parliament refrain from transmitting the Bill to the President until the Supreme Court resolves the issues at hand.
