Shireen Abu Akleh who began working for Al Jazeera in 1997 has been killed on May 11, 2022.
The veteran journalist was shot in the head while wearing a blue flak jacket marked with the word “PRESS”.
According to reports available to Coverghana.com.gh, she was killed by Israeli Defense Forces in the West Bank during her assignment covering Israeli raids in the Jenin refugee camp.
Israel disputes that she was killed on purpose by Israeli gunfire, even though multiple eye witnesses claim that there was no fighting before Abu Akleh and her crew arrived as well as her wearing an obviously marked press vest.
The Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh died at age 51 years.
She was known as a “voice for the voiceless”, having reported on Palestine and the surrounding regions for over three decades.
According to former President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama, the killing of ace Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is a most condemnable act.
He said, for a journalist who has for many years covered and brought us reports of events in Israel and the Middle East region, we all mourn her loss. It is our prayer that whoever pulled the trigger and any associates will be brought to justice through an Independent and transparent process.
“Having said that, we also note that the murderers of Ghanaian journalist, Ahmed Suale, are still walking free. We call on the Akufo-Addo administration and the Police Service to take this investigation seriously and bring the murderers to justice.” John Dramani Mahama said.
