Amy Vivian Coney Barrett is an American lawyer and judge who serves as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. She is the fifth woman to serve on the Supreme Court, having been appointed by President Donald Trump on October 27, 2020.

Barrett attended Rhodes College before entering Notre Dame Law School, where he earned a J.D. with honors in 1997. She then worked as a law clerk for Judge Laurence Silberman and Justice Antonin Scalia. Barrett joined the faculty of Notre Dame Law School in 2002 and was promoted to professor in 2010. She has continued to teach civil procedure, constitutional law, and legislative interpretation while on the federal bench.

Trump nominated Barrett to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the United States Supreme Court on September 26, 2020. Her nomination was contentious because the 2020 presidential election was only 38 days away, and Senate Republicans had refused to schedule Merrick Garland hearings during an election year in 2016. The next month, the United States Senate voted 52-48 to confirm her candidacy, with all Democrats and one Republican voting nay.

Barrett, who has been described as Justice Antonin Scalia’s protégé, believes in textualism in legislative interpretation and originalism in constitutional interpretation. She is widely regarded as a member of the Court’s conservative bloc.
