Rota began his political career as a member of the North Bay City Council in 1980. He was then elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the electoral district of Nipissing-Timiskaming in 2004, representing the Liberal Party of Canada. He has been re-elected in every federal election since then, except for the 2006 federal election, which he lost to Conservative Jay Aspin. Rota regained his seat in the 2008 federal election.
As the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rota is responsible for maintaining order and decorum in the House, presiding over debates, and ensuring that parliamentary procedures are followed.
