Arrest of CSSMA President is a desperate scheme by Akufo-Addo to intimidate and silence critical voices – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi says, the arrest and detention of the President of the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah is a desperate attempt by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party government to intimidate, harass and silence critical voices ahead of the December 2020 polls.

Sammy Gyamfi said this following the arrest and detention of Michael Kwadwo Peprah ahead of the Association’s planned press conference to expose the President Akufo-Addo’s government on mining related issues.

Michael Kwadwo Peprah was arrested in the Ashanti region on Saturday night, 29th August, 2020 and has been sent to the Central Police Station in Kumasi waiting to be transported to Accra, on the orders of the Environment Minister and Chief “Galamsey” promoter, Professor Frimpong Boateng.

In a press statement issued Sammy Gyamfi said, “this is shameful act, which is part of a desperate scheme by the oppressive and despotic Akufo Addo-government to intimidate, harass and silence critical voices ahead of the 2020 general elections.”

According to Sammy Gyamfi, the party was reliably informed that, Michael Kwadwo Peprah has not been given access to his lawyers by the Police. The NDC humbly entreat the media and CSOs to follow this matter and give it the attention it deserves.
