In a surprising turn of events, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced the dismissal of Chris Hughton from his role as the head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars with immediate effect.

The decision, effective immediately, comes as a result of the team’s recent underwhelming performance.

Following the Black Stars’ disappointing exit from AFCON 2023 without a win in their three group games, the GFA made the decision to relieve Hughton of his duties.

In a brief statement issued late Tuesday evening, the GFA confirmed Hughton’s departure and also revealed that the technical team of the Black Stars would be dissolved.

“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” the statement read. “The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton, who was appointed in February 2023, had the responsibility of overseeing the team’s qualifiers for AFCON 2023 and the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Prior to his appointment as head coach, he served as the Technical Adviser of the Black Stars for the two-legged play-offs of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria.

The decision to part ways with Hughton and dissolve the technical team reflects the GFA’s commitment to addressing the team’s recent shortcomings and charting a new path forward.

The association will now embark on a search for a suitable replacement who can lead the Black Stars to future success.
