Bola Tinubu Appointed as New Ecowas Chair

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has taken on the role of Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), succeeding President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea Bissau.

The announcement was made during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Ecowas leadership, marking Tinubu’s first official engagement within the African continent since assuming office in May.

President Tinubu expressed his commitment to the responsibilities of the office and emphasized the importance of running the regional organization with inclusivity at its core.

He emphasized the significance of democracy as the best form of government and affirmed his dedication to upholding democratic principles within the region.

Acknowledging the threats posed by insecurity, including the activities of Islamist extremist groups and political crises stemming from military coups in certain countries, Tinubu stressed the need for urgent action to address these challenges.

He noted that without a peaceful environment, progress and development in the region would remain elusive.

“In this regard, we must remain committed to utilizing all available regional frameworks to tackle the menace of insecurity,” President Tinubu stated.

Recognizing the alarming level of the threat, he underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to restore stability and create an environment conducive to progress and prosperity.
