Coleridge Bernard “C. J.” Stroud IV is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Ohio State, where he holds many school records, including most passing yards in a single game with 573, as well as being the first player to throw for six touchdowns three times. Stroud was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2021 and 2022 and was selected by the Texans second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Stroud, the youngest of four children, was born on October 3, 2001, in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Coleridge Bernard Stroud III, Stroud’s father, was sentenced to 38 years to life in prison in 2016 after pleading guilty to abduction, carjacking, and robbery in connection with a drug-related event under California’s three-strikes legislation. His father is serving his term in Folsom State Prison, near Sacramento, as of 2023.

The Stroud family was deeply in debt as a result of Stroud’s incarceration; they lived in a tiny apartment above a storage facility when Stroud attended Rancho Cucamonga High School. He was named the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin’s offensive player of the year as a senior after throwing for 3,878 yards and 47 touchdowns.
