In a dramatic turn of events, Mr. Confidence Dunyo, popularly known as “The Great Abakaliki” or “Elovi,” and the Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Central Tongu Constituency, engaged in a heated altercation with a former NPP Polling Station Executive, Mr. Jato Emmanuel Kofi, on October 19, 2024, at Mafi Dzogadze. The incident, which almost spiraled into full-blown chaos, was fortunately averted by the intervention of passersby.

The Incident

The altercation took place during a funeral at Mafi Kanikorfe, where a large number of people gathered in the spirit of communal support. Among those present were political figures and supporters, along with their branded and unbranded vehicles, making the occasion not just a communal event but also a stage for political presence.

In the late afternoon, as the funeral activities were winding down, many attendees sought transportation assistance to return home. Mr. Jato, a former NPP Dzogadze Polling Station Executive, approached an NPP vehicle for a ride. According to eyewitnesses at Mafi Norgbedzikorfe, the vehicle initially slowed down, prompting Mr. Jato and his friend to run towards it. However, a voice from the vehicle shouted that it was full, and the driver was instructed to drive off, leaving Mr. Jato visibly embarrassed.

While those in the vehicle explained that it was indeed full, eyewitnesses disputed this claim, asserting that the pickup truck only had four to five people in the back. They noted that while it was impractical to accommodate all the bystanders at the location, it would have been better if the situation had been explained to Mr. Jato more respectfully.

Feeling disregarded, Mr. Jato, a dedicated party member, found transportation on an Okada (motorbike taxi) and caught up with the vehicle. He expressed his frustration to the passengers, stating that the vehicle belonged to everyone and implying that their control over it was temporary.

Physical Altercation

As the Okada overtook the vehicle and Mr. Jato was about to disembark at Mafi Dzogadze, the situation took a turn for the worse. Elovi, the NPP Youth Organizer, jumped out of the vehicle, followed by other passengers, and confronted Mr. Jato. Allegedly, Elovi accused Mr. Jato of recording videos of the passengers and vehicle. In the ensuing melee, Elovi repeatedly snatched Mr. Jato’s phone, which fell to the ground during one of the struggles.

The situation escalated when Mr. Jato was shoved to the ground, falling onto the Okada rider and his friend. The Okada rider, angered by the treatment of his passenger, got involved in the altercation. In a moment reminiscent of a sports drama, the rider headbutted Elovi in the chest, similar to the famous Zidane-Materazzi incident in the 2006 World Cup.

At this point, fearing that the situation would spiral out of control, bystanders intervened. Elovi was quickly bundled into the vehicle, and efforts were made to calm Mr. Jato and diffuse the tension.

Aftermath and Political Ramifications

Once the situation had cooled down and Elovi’s entourage had departed, Mr. Jato discovered that his phone’s screen had been badly damaged during the scuffle. He reported the incident to the NPP Constituency Chairman and considered filing a formal police complaint. However, other NPP members urged him to allow the party to resolve the matter internally.

As of the time of this report, Mr. Jato’s phone is in the custody of a respected NPP member, who promised to repair it for him.

The incident has raised concerns about the conduct of party members in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections. With the NPP striving to “Break the Eight” and make inroads in constituencies traditionally dominated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), such public altercations risk creating disaffection within the party and among the electorate.

A Broader Issue?

In a separate development, an NPP campaign team that visited the Dzogadze community was met with a walkout by community members after exchanging greetings. Some have speculated that this earlier encounter might have influenced the subsequent “mistreatment” of Mr. Jato. Whether this connection holds remains unclear, but it adds a layer of complexity to the situation.

As the NPP continues its campaign efforts in Central Tongu, only time will tell how this altercation will impact the party’s standing in the constituency.
