Classroom management: How to manage large classroom sizes with ease

Managing large classrooms is one of the challenges teachers face in their various classrooms. It must not be ignored because, it contributes to learner development and social development.

To succeed in handling a classroom, the teacher must employ the collective efforts of teaching strategies, daily classroom routines, group work, and paperwork including classroom management strategies for an effective outcome.


Further, there are some key tips that the teacher must always heed to while having in mind that he/she is set to manage a classroom (one of the collective efforts).


1. As a teacher, to achieve a classroom management goal, do not yell at pupils /or avoid screaming at pupils.

2. Do not let your emotions conflict with your responsibility. Always be patient and regulate your emotions when handling learners.

3. Always work on new ways that will unveil more about your learners. Some learners might be difficult to handle in class due to some reasons therefore, as a teacher, you must devise new ways to know and discover more about them which will aid the delivery of your duty easily.

4. Avoid punishing the whole class. Always, fish out the offender and find out the reasons behind their action. Punishing the whole class can cause the teacher to lose the trust of the learners also.

Learners might see you as an “unqualified” teacher because, through social media, they watch movies that educate on learner and behaviour management which has benefited and brought joy to characters therefore, they also expect a replica.

5. Allow learners to take decisions that will also help them learn cause and effect. If their decision(s) lead to success with little guidance from the teacher, then, there is a high possibility of making other good decisions with the help of the teacher.

On the other edge, if their decision(s) performs poorly, they will call for all hands on deck to champion the course and learn the best from it.


Many strategies can help in addressing classroom management challenges.
Below are some of the Classroom management strategies:

1. Think-Pair-Share.

In employing this strategy, ensure that students get time to think about their answer before telling the teacher and class their final findings.

Also, make sure everyone speaks during the process to ensure that they have decided on a solution before the submission of their final findings. Again, the teacher has to increase confidence and motivation for a successful course.


2. Assessment

Define the mode for answering questions and controlling the class during lesson delivery. Either learners raise their hands, thumbs up/ down or a finger up for a reason you have defined for them, etc.

3. Assign roles to learners in the classroom. For instance, a class prefect will share exercise books, etc.

4. Assign students’ numbers and have them call them out for attendance.

As a teacher, desist from prioritizing challenges because teaching is a relationship and your actions affect the experience of learners. Make concrete and always make collective decisions.

All challenges must be given equal attention and importance because all affect the experience of learners in the classroom.

Students have several reasons for their actions in the classroom which causes the teacher restlessness while managing the classroom.

In view of that giving up won’t be the best option to opt for. Here are some vital tips to help overcome the experience.

3. Always have an organized and orderly classroom.

Some roles to be used in group work are as follows:

  1. Leader: moderates the discussion and keeps it on topic.
  2. Timekeeper: keeps track of time.
  3. Secretary: writes down the group’s ideas as they are agreed upon by everyone.
  4. Encourager: ensures that everyone participates effectively.
  5. Reporter: reports the group’s findings to the whole class.
  6. Explainer: ensures that all members understand the group’s solutions to the task.
