Addressing the 2023 May Day parade in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, the Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah  has advised the government to consider converting the National Cathedral into a national hospital. This proposal comes at a time when the country is facing a dire need for improved healthcare facilities, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The National Cathedral, which is still under construction, has been a subject of controversy since its inception. While some have argued that it is a worthy national project, others have questioned the wisdom of investing millions of dollars in a religious structure. The TUC’s proposal to convert it into a hospital is a welcome suggestion that would help address some of the pressing healthcare needs of the country.

Ghana’s healthcare system has been struggling to meet the needs of its citizens for many years. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the deficiencies in the system and the urgent need for improvement. The country has been grappling with a shortage of hospital beds, oxygen supply, and other medical equipment. The situation has been worsened by the lack of funds, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to healthcare services, especially in rural areas.

He added that the National Cathedral if converted into a hospital, could go a long way in addressing some of these challenges. The structure is spacious and could accommodate a significant number of hospital beds. It is also centrally located in the capital city, Accra, making it accessible to many people. Furthermore, the conversion of the National Cathedral into a hospital would create employment opportunities for health professionals and support staff.

“The president has always said he wants to create another Notre Dame in Ghana so we can attract a lot of visitors, but we disagree. In fact, comrades, it will be better to convert the project into a national hospital,” Dr Yaw Baah said adding “Mr. President you can also reduce the size of your government. Ghana has too many ministers and deputy ministers.”
