Decline in Basic Education Financing, a worrying trend – GNECC
Oti Regional chapter of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition
The Oti Regional chapter of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition marked the Global Action Week for Education in Jasikan on the 26th of April, 2023.
The celebration was organized under the theme” Domestic Funding; Key to Sustainable Basic Education. “
As part of the activity, some basic school students in Oti Region visited the office of the Oti Regional Education Director to put their plights as Ghanaian students.
In their request, they indicated that the government should increase the capitation grant and pay it timely.
They also requested that the government should provide adequate infrastructure and desks for all Basic Schools in Oti Region.
In an interview with the Oti Regional Coordinator, Ernest Adade, he indicated that in order not for any child to be left behind, there is a need for government to commit 1.5% of the education budget to Inclusive Education as the President promised at the 2018 world disability forum.
He added, about 20,152 pupils in the Nkwanta North district alone in the Oti region did not have desks as of 2022. This is a worrying trend.
We are also very aware that there are some “schools still under trees and dilapidated structure” in the Oti region which adds up to over 5,000 schools under trees and over 4,000 schools in dilapidated structure.
He finally admonished the government to invest heavily in Basic Education as it forms the foundation of the educational ladder.
