Disgruntled Black Stars supporters in Ivory Coast reportedly receive $400 compensation after threatening departure

A group of passionate supporters of the Ghanaian national football team, the Black Stars, who had earlier voiced their dissatisfaction and threatened to return home from Ivory Coast, have now received a compensation of $400 each.
The enthusiastic supporters had been transported to Ivory Coast by the Government of Ghana to rally behind the Black Stars during the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. However, on Monday, January 15, they expressed disappointment over a lack of coordination and support from the organizing bodies.
With a sense of frustration stemming from what they perceived as neglect, over 300 supporters collectively issued a threat to abandon their posts and head back to Ghana, threatening to expose the officials involved in the process.
Following negotiations with the disgruntled supporters, officials took immediate action to address their concerns. After several rounds of discussions, compensation of $400 was paid to each of the supporters, satisfying their grievances.
Confirming the resolution, a journalist embedded with the supporters shared with Citi Eyewitness News that officials engaged in fruitful negotiations after the supporters had expressed their intentions to expose the officials and return to Ghana.
“There is good news. Yesterday, after the story broke, around midnight, in fact, most of us here went to sleep before the officials arrived. They came to call us and provided us with the compensation we were due,” the journalist stated.
When asked if all supporters received $400, the journalist responded, “I am not aware of the specific details, but based on information from supporters in other hotels, it seems that they also received $400, similar to those at the hotel where I am staying.”
Regarding the duration of the compensation, the journalist clarified, “For the entire tournament, in fact, officials were unable to inform us, so we are uncertain if this $400 is intended to cover the entirety of the tournament.”
