Education Minister opposes review of Free SHS Policy

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister, unequivocally rejected calls for a review of the Free SHS policy during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

While acknowledging that the policy has faced criticism, Dr. Adutwum emphasized the need for targeted improvements in specific areas rather than a complete review.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, during his national tour, reiterated his commitment to reviewing the policy if elected president in the 2024 elections. He proposed convening stakeholders in the education sector within the first 100 days of his government to scrutinize both the Free SHS policy and the broader education sector.

When questioned about the potential review of the Free SHS policy, Education Minister Adutwum stated that the current form of the policy does not warrant a review but rather requires focused improvements.

He emphasized the importance of training teachers to ensure they are adequately prepared for effective teaching, which will ultimately lead to better learning outcomes.

“Regardless of what you do, there will always be areas that need improvement. In terms of improvements, we can focus on training teachers and ensuring they are well-prepared to provide better learning outcomes,” said Dr. Adutwum.

When asked if there is a possibility of parents paying for boarding while day education remains free, the Education Minister firmly responded in the negative, stating, “No… We simply need to improve the learning outcomes and ensure that the investment is worthwhile for Ghanaians. They should know that their taxpayers’ money is being used for their benefit, and we are working to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.”
