Eduwatch condemns inhumane treatment of University of Ghana student for allegedly being ‘gay’

An advocacy organization, Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), has strongly condemned the “inhuman treatment” inflicted upon a University of Ghana student based on allegations of being gay.

A disturbing video that circulated widely captured the student being forcibly undressed, physically assaulted, and made to walk around the campus.

In a statement issued on January 16, Eduwatch described the act as “criminal, inhuman, and degrading.”

“We deeply regret that such a cruel treatment was recorded on video and circulated on social media. Eduwatch unequivocally condemns this criminal, inhuman, and degrading act, which violates the individual’s right to dignity and freedom from inhuman and degrading treatment as enshrined in Article 15 of the 1992 Constitution,” the statement read.

Eduwatch called upon Ghanaians to refrain from engaging in instant justice, emphasizing that the country is governed by laws.

The organization also urged the Vice Chancellor of the University and the Ghana Police Service to swiftly initiate investigations into this barbaric act, bring the perpetrators to justice, identify the victim, and provide necessary health support.

Furthermore, Eduwatch emphasized the need for increased security on campuses to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals.

These events occur at a time when Parliament is deliberating on the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021.

The proposed bill, which has garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally, seeks to suppress the recognition and promotion of the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals or groups.

Among its provisions, the bill criminalizes same-sex relationships, as well as sexual activities between humans and animals or objects, proposing imprisonment terms ranging from three to five years.
