Final-year KNUST students laments impact of TEWUG strike

The Final-year students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) lament the impact of the TEWUG strike.

The students said they are feeling the adverse effects of the ongoing strike by the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG). They also added that they are facing difficulties in accessing essential resources, such as the university library which is impeding their research work and other academic activities.

Expressing their frustration and confusion, the students are concerned that the ongoing labour unrest might impact their planned completion date. As the TEWUG strike moves into its second day, the situation for students is worsening. Lecture halls remain locked, and lectures have been canceled as a result.

Some students who spoke to Citi News also raised concerns about their health and the deteriorating cleanliness on campus. Since the strike began, dustbins have not been emptied, resulting in an unsanitary environment.

One final-year student expressed their plight, saying, “The strike is really affecting me as a final-year student because before we went on vacation, our project work groupings were not finalized. When we returned, the process was delayed even further. It was just last week that we were finally assigned group members and topics. Unfortunately, the library has been closed down, and we are unable to meet and conduct research on our assigned topics.”

Dr. Obed Broohm, a lecturer at the Department of Language and Communication Sciences, echoed the students’ sentiments and highlighted the disruption caused by the absence of technicians to work on the PA sound system during lectures.

“I am aware that lecture rooms in some colleges and faculties have been shut down because we require technicians to set up the PA system for lectures to take place, and that is a problem. Additionally, there are concerns about sanitation on campus, as the staff responsible for handling it are part of the striking faction. Another area affected is the hospital, where people are unable to receive their test results due to the strike. We urge the government and all stakeholders to give this matter the attention it deserves,” Dr. Broohm emphasized.

The current situation has created significant challenges for final-year students at KNUST. They are grappling with limited access to crucial academic resources, disrupted lectures, and concerns about their health and campus cleanliness. The students hope for a swift resolution to the TEWUG strike, allowing them to resume their studies and complete their final year without further delays.
