GES to meet Teacher Unions over payment of rent related issues

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to meet leadership of the Pre-Tertiary Teacher Unions over the issue of rent payment for teachers living in school/government bungalows.

GES made this information known in a press release, addressing the concerns raised by the general public over a directive that, 10% of salaries of teachers living in school bungalows should be deducted for rent.

The Western Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service had earlier directed that, all teachers living in School/Government bungalows would have to pay 10% of their salaries as rent.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) however, disagreed with the directive, citing section 21(i) of the Collective Agreement enacted between GES and Teacher Unions as its reason.

The release, signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo (Head, Public Relations Unit) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) fully endorsed the letter issued by its Western Regional Director.

Teachers across the country have expressed their displeasure and urging their colleagues living in school bungalows to opt for accommodation outside the school premises.

But, management of GES has taken note of the concerns raised by GNAT on behalf of the Pre-tertiary Education Unions on this issue and will be meeting the leadership of the Unions fo discuss their concerns in the coming days.
