Ghana graduate physician assistants association initiates nationwide strike over discrimination

The Ghana Graduate Physician Assistants Association has announced its decision to embark on a nationwide strike starting from today, July 19, 2023, in protest against what they perceive as discrimination and maltreatment of Physician Assistants (PAs) in their profession.

Citing consistent threats to their dignity, the Association expressed its discontent with the way Physician Assistants have been undermined and disrespected by the public for an extended period.

They also highlighted various challenges faced by PAs, such as the discontinuation of some PA training schools, the failure of candidates in licensing examinations, and the government’s reluctance to facilitate PA postings.

The Association made it clear that unless the government takes immediate action to address these issues and improve the treatment of PAs in their service to the state, the strike will proceed as planned.

Joel Tetteh Padi, the General Secretary of the Association, underscored the significance of this strike action, drawing attention to a distressing incident in 2018 when a Physician Assistant was unjustly imprisoned for nearly two weeks, causing immense trauma.

Through previous demonstrations, the Association achieved some positive changes and reforms within their profession.

However, they firmly believe that more needs to be done to ensure that PAs receive the respect and recognition they deserve as highly qualified professionals in the health sector.

One of the key concerns raised by the General Secretary is the directive from the Ghana Medical and Dental Council that restricts Physician Assistants from independently signing certain patient forms related to rest or sick leave.

This limitation forces PAs, particularly those in rural areas without easy access to doctors, to seek approval from doctors in urban centers before providing necessary patient care.

The Association calls for urgent attention from the Ministry of Health to address these discriminatory practices and mistreatment faced by Physician Assistants.

They emphasize that PAs play a crucial role in the healthcare system and deserve fair treatment and autonomy in their professional duties.
