Ghana Labour Unions set to stage strike in protest of VAT on Residential Electricity
Members of organized labour unions throughout Ghana have announced their intention to initiate a strike on February 13, 2024, to protest against the government’s recent introduction of a 15 percent value-added tax (VAT) on residential electricity consumption.

Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), addressed the media during a press briefing on Friday afternoon, revealing that the decision to strike was reached during a closed-door session by the labor union leadership. The move comes as a result of the government’s failure to address the grievances raised by the unions regarding the imposition of VAT on electricity usage.
In a bid to demonstrate their solidarity and unwavering stance, Dr. Baah called upon all workers in Ghana to wear red attire to work starting from Monday, serving as a powerful visual symbol to convey their refusal to compromise until the government withdraws the decision to impose VAT on electricity.

Dr. Baah expressed concerns over the potential ripple effects of the VAT imposition, suggesting that it could pave the way for further taxes on essential items. He voiced apprehensions that VAT might be extended to other goods such as books, water, and even reproductive choices, highlighting the broader implications of the decision.
Through their planned strike action, the organized labor unions aim to underscore their firm opposition to the implementation of VAT on residential electricity and urge the government to reconsider its stance.
