The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Deputy General Secretary for Dagbandow Kwame, goes on his knees to plead with teachers who are fleeing Bawku in Upper East Region because of the conflict to return.

He took the pain to beg teachers to consider the plight of the less privilege students who are the most affected.

According to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), about hundred (100) of its members (teachers) have so far fled the troubled Bawku township in the Upper East Region due to the unendles conflict in the area.

The General Secretary of Association Mr. Thomas Musah Tanko explained that, the development was understandable given the turmoil in the area.

Mr. Thomas Musah said, “As it stands now, 100 have left. They have been given the release to leave, and I think the rest are also pursuing the release to leave. The teachers have all gone to the education directorate and are asking for release to leave the place.”

According to the GNAT General Secretary, the teachers in the area desired better security, but it seems such a request had become difficult to achieve.

“We have appealed to the security people and all the people in the areas to ensure that the place is safe for our members to teach [in peace]. If the rest leave, then it is going to be dire. Many children will be left behind, particularly the children in Bawku. At the end of the day, we will have all of them going into child labour and that will be dire for us,” Thomas Musah Tanko has warned.

As you can recall, the Bawku conflict has so far claimed several lives, with many residents being displaced.

Coverghana.com.gh can report that, since the conflict comences, members of the Interior and Defence Committee of Parliament have been to Bawku to assess the security situation to propose a lasting solution.
