GTEC approves new courses for Universities

Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has approved new courses counting over 1,000 for study by public universities across the country.
GTEC said it will begin receiving applications from various tertiary institutions for the new programmes in February 2024.

Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor revealed this new development in a media briefing in Kumasi on Monday, January 22, 2024.
He said the programmes will help streamline the academic calendar of tertiary institutions.
Explaining, the success of the programmes, the Director-General of GTEC, Dr. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor said that a new body will be established to monitor such programmes by public universities.
“We want institutions to stay in their niche, institutions should stay in their mandate areas. Institutions cannot be doing anything and everything. The system whereby you have technology institutions that are mandated to do technology-oriented programmes, but today doing Akan, and Twi, Dagbani, I think should be something of the past.
“Hence, this body will ensure that you fall within your niche, the programmes must have relevance to the developmental aspirations of this country. And such programmes should not feed into saturated markets of this economy,” the Director-General of GTEC stated.
“Beginning February 1, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission will be receiving new applications from public institutions. However, as we accept these new programmes there is something that is going to inform the whole practice.
“We are going to set up a new body that will be dealing with policy approval. We want institutions to stay in their mandate. Institutions cannot be doing anything and everything,” he stated.
