Hon. Elikplim Akurugu Commends PIWAK CEO for Empowering Women Traders in Abokobi

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Hon. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, has commended the Chief Executive Officer of PIWAK Natural Health, Dr. Prince Nelson Mortoti, for his remarkable show of generosity and community leadership through a ₵300,000 business support package for women traders in the Abokobi community.
The initiative, dubbed the Business Support Initiative for Women in Abokobi, saw 300 traders each receiving ₵1,000 to enhance their small-scale businesses and strengthen their economic independence.
The event, held at Abokobi in the Ga East Municipality, brought together traditional leaders, the Municipal Chief Executive, community stakeholders, and hundreds of excited market women beneficiaries.

In her address, Hon. Akurugu described the initiative as a powerful symbol of hope, empowerment, and compassion, saying it reflects the true essence of leadership and philanthropy.
“Today’s event is not just about the presentation of funds. It is about hope. It is about recognizing the tireless efforts of women who wake up before dawn to set up their tables and face each day with courage and determination,” she said.
The MP expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Prince Nelson Mortoti for his consistent support for women and vulnerable groups, noting that his gesture would go a long way to improve livelihoods and uplift families within the constituency.
“Dr. Mortoti, your act of kindness is not only timely but deeply impactful. You have chosen to invest in the very backbone of our local economy — our market women. This kind of philanthropy exemplifies true leadership and community spirit, and for that, Dome-Kwabenya is truly grateful,” she stated.
Drawing from her personal experience, Hon. Akurugu, who is the daughter of a petty trader, spoke passionately about the daily struggles of women in small businesses and the transformative power of financial support.
“As the first daughter of a petty trader, this initiative touches me personally. I know what it means to manage a small business with little capital, to stretch every cedi, and to turn a handful of goods into a day’s profit,” she shared.
She praised Ghanaian women for their resilience, ingenuity, and unmatched ability to multiply resources.
“Give a woman ten cedis, and she will make twenty. Give her a small business, and she will build a home, educate her children, and still find a way to give back to society. This is the strength and wisdom of Ghanaian women,” she added.

Hon. Akurugu urged the beneficiaries to make prudent use of the support received, emphasizing that it should serve as a seed for long-term growth and community transformation.

The MP also used the occasion to call on other corporate bodies, philanthropists, and well-meaning individuals to emulate Dr. Mortoti’s example by investing in other critical sectors such as health, education, market infrastructure, and youth employment within Dome-Kwabenya.
“Dome-Kwabenya is full of potential and promise, but we cannot do it alone. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive constituency where every woman, man, and child can thrive,” she said.
Hon. Akurugu concluded with heartfelt words of encouragement to women, commending their resilience and unwavering contribution to nation-building.
