Hon. Okudzeto vows to continue exposés on National Cathedral following dismissal of contempt suit

North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has pledged to continue his fight against the construction of the National Cathedral of Ghana following the dismissal of a contempt suit filed against him by Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, the Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the project.

The court dismissed the suit on May 2, 2023 citing a lack of evidence that met the legal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

In an interview with Media General after the verdict, Ablakwa expressed his determination to expose corruption and wrongdoing related to the National Cathedral project, saying that the outcome of the case had given him “impetus,” “more verve,” and “more drive” to do what was right in the national interest.

He also accused project leaders of abusing the judicial process and pledged to resist the cathedral’s construction, which he called “the most reckless, the most corrupt, the most ungodly project ever” and “really blasphemous” and “sacrilegious.”

Ablakwa’s comments come as controversy continues to swirl around the National Cathedral project, which has been criticized by some Ghanaians who say that the country should focus on other priorities, such as healthcare and education, rather than spending money on a religious building.

Others have criticized the project’s potential impact on green space and local communities. Despite the opposition, however, the cathedral’s construction has continued, with project leaders saying that it will serve as a symbol of Ghana’s Christian faith and cultural heritage.
