What is NHIS Card?

NHIS is the abbreviation for National Health Insurance Scheme. The card is used in Ghana to access free basic health care. Children from three (3) months old and above can use the card.

The NHIS covers outpatient services, comprising diagnostic testing and operations such as hernia repair; most in-patient services, including specialist care, most surgeries, and hospital accommodation (general ward); oral health treatments; all maternity care services, including Caesarean deliveries; emergency care; and others.

Is an NHIS card an ID?

Yes, it is an ID. It is one of the principal recognizable national ID cards used by financial institutions in the country in the gratification of part of the Know-Your-Customer requirements of the Bank of Ghana.

How much does it cost to gain an NHIS card?

The premium and enrolment processing fee from the non-exempt group is GHS30. 00 (US$6.33) per year. Nonetheless, the exempt group only pays a processing fee of GHS8. 00 (US$1.69) for new enrolment and GHS5.

How to register your NHIS card on your phone

Dial *929# on any mobile phone network in Ghana (MTN, Vodafone, Airtel-Tigo, Glo) From the numerous alternatives that come, enter 2 to choose Renew Membership. Enter 1 to choose the NHIS card. Enter your NHIS membership number and press send.

Dial *929# on a network.
Select option 1.
Select NHIS card.
Enter your NHIS membership card number

How to Renew your NHIS card.

To renew your NHIS, do the following.

1. Dial *929#
2. Select Option 2.
3. Select NHIS Card.
4. Enter the 8 Digit Membership Number.
5. Press Send.
6. Follow the instruction for payment.
