“I am yet to see a pregnant man who has been impregnated by a woman” – Ex-CJ Sophia Akuffo

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has expressed her strong opposition to the activities of the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing the importance of upholding religious beliefs and traditional values in the country.

In an interview on Metro TV on December 25, 2023, Sophia Akuffo emphasized the divine purpose of heterosexual relationships, highlighting the biblical perspective on procreation. She questioned the concept of same-sex marriages and raised doubts about how same-sex couples could fulfill the divine mandate to multiply.

Referring to existing laws and regulations, Sophia Akuffo stated that there are specific rules governing male and female relationships, as outlined in the Criminal Offenses Act. She expressed her disbelief at the idea of individuals seeking to marry animals and stressed that the divine assignment to replenish the earth requires the participation of both males and females.

Addressing the issue of parenting, Sophia Akuffo questioned the legitimacy of two individuals of the same gender claiming parenthood. She pointed out that while two men may carry a baby, it still required the contribution of a male and a female to conceive the child. She expressed her concern about the potential degradation of Ghanaian society if it were to embrace such practices.

Parliament is currently considering the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2022.” The objective of this bill is to establish guidelines for human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, with a specific focus on prohibiting LGBTQ+ and related activities.

The bill is currently undergoing a clause-by-clause review, during which amendments may be made before it can be enacted into law.
