Ignore NPP’s outlandish and fantasy target of 500,000 votes in the volta region – Volta NDC

In a direct response to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) projection of winning 500,000 votes in the Volta Region in the upcoming December 7 elections, the Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on Ghanaians, especially Voltarians, to dismiss what they describe as “laughable” and “fantasy” claims. The NDC asserts that this ambitious target set by NPP National Communications Director Richard Ahiagba highlights a detachment from the political reality on the ground.

According to the NDC’s Volta Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, Mr. Ahiagba’s statement is more an exercise in self-amusement than a genuine campaign strategy. He urged Voltarians to view the target as “insulting to the intelligence” of the region’s voters, who have consistently shown a strong preference for the NDC.

The NPP has repeatedly set ambitious targets for the Volta Region, only to miss them by wide margins. In 2016, the NPP projected a goal of capturing 30% of the vote in the region but managed to secure just 10.81%. Similarly, in 2020, the party aimed to expand its share but gained only 14.14%. Agbleze argues that these numbers reflect a chronic inability to resonate with the people of the Volta Region, emphasizing that “the NPP’s failure to make meaningful inroads is evidence of the party’s disconnect from the region’s people and their aspirations.”

Since 2008, the NPP’s support in the Volta Region has shown only inconsistent growth: from 15.38% in 2008 to a drop in 2012 to 12.9%, falling again to 10.81% in 2016, and slightly increasing to 14.14% in 2020. With over a million registered voters in the region, the NPP’s recent target implies a steep rise in support that the NDC believes is unrealistic. According to Agbleze, achieving this goal would necessitate a level of trust the NPP “has never earned and will never receive.”

The NDC maintains that the Volta Region, a stronghold for the party, will not be swayed by what they view as empty promises. “This is the same party,” Agbleze said, “that has presided over years of economic hardship with soaring prices, rampant unemployment, and a depreciating cedi.” The NDC accuses the NPP of engaging in rhetoric disconnected from the hardships experienced by everyday Ghanaians.

Instead of focusing on “delusional goals,” the NDC suggests that the NPP should examine the economic challenges facing the country and the discontent of citizens. The NPP’s approach, the statement claims, only serves to highlight a fundamental misalignment between their messaging and the lived reality of Ghanaians.

The NDC in the Volta Region remains confident in its standing with Voltarians and urges voters to reject what they label as propaganda from the NPP. The party is resolute in its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Volta Region, assuring the public of their continuous efforts to maintain the region as an NDC stronghold.
