Private legal Practitioner, Clara Beeri Kasser-Tee in a write-up indicated that politicians doing politics does not undermine the country’s democracy and that what undermines democracy is institutions of democracy getting involved in or doing politics with politicians.

What undermines democracy is not politicians doing politics. What undermines democracy is institutions of democracy getting involved in or doing politics with politicians. What undermines democracy is institutions of democracy appearing to “take sides”. That is why Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu’s letter, stating on the letterhead of an institution of state the electability or otherwise of the flagbearer of a political party should worry all of us.

It undermines confidence in Institutions, as part of the job of the OSP does not include determining the electability or otherwise of politicians. Also, if you occupy a public office, remember that anytime you use the office for anything other than what the office is set up to achieve you have “abused the office”.

We must remember that no matter the situation, we should all be confident that institutions of democracy will remain loyal to the ideals of democracy- transparency, professionalism, fairness, justice, respect for human rights, etc. The letterhead of of a public office carries some “spirit of the people” and must be treated as such. That is why Trump throwing a tantrum does not bother me – because I expect the institutions of democracy to handle this in accordance with the ideals of democracy, and loyalty to God and country rather than party or person.

There is a reason we say “justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done”. What makes democracy strong or weak, largely depends on how strong or weak its institutions are. We must work hard in differentiating between the person and the “office”. A communication on a letterhead is not “the person”, it is the “office”.
