It’s better to learn under trees than not to be educated – Vincent Assafuah

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo constituency, has come out in defense of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, arguing against calls for its review.

According to him, it is preferable for students to study under makeshift conditions, such as trees, than to be deprived of education altogether.

Mr. Assafuah’s remarks were made in response to the growing demands for a review of the Free SHS policy. The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, also opposes these calls, asserting that the policy does not require any revisions.

During an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on January 31, 2024, Mr. Assafuah acknowledged the challenges faced by the education sector but argued that reviewing the policy would not be the appropriate solution.

He emphasized the importance of all leaders rallying behind the policy to support the future generation. Despite the existing challenges, he stressed that students are still receiving education, which he considers the most crucial aspect.

Mr. Assafuah underscored the significance of providing education for the coming generations and urged all Ghanaians to collaborate in addressing challenges rather than calling for a review.

“In my view, it is better for a young person to sit on the floor without a desk and still have the opportunity to learn, rather than being left uneducated. It is better for a young person to attend school without proper footwear and still receive an education, rather than being deprived of education entirely.”
