Ivan Cleary is an Australian professional rugby league coach and former professional rugby league footballer who played as a fullback and centre in the 1990s and 2000s. He is the head coach of the Penrith Panthers in the National Rugby League (NRL).
He is a former head coach of the Wests Tigers and the New Zealand Warriors, as well as the three-time NRL Premiership winning head coach of the Penrith Panthers, who guided the Panthers to three consecutive NRL Premierships in 2021, 2022, and 2023, being the only coach in NRL history to do so. Cleary was a goal-kicking fullback who played club football in Australia and New Zealand. During the 1998 NRL Premiership, he set a new record for most points scored in a season. Nathan Cleary, the Panthers’ co-captain, is his son.
Cleary began his career as a goal-kicking fullback for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles before transferring to Reserve Grade for the Sea Eagles in 1992 and 1993. He began his first grade career with the Manly-Warringah club in 1992, playing two games before earning his chance in mid-1993 when the team’s first choice fullback Matthew Ridge sustained a season-ending injury. Cleary stood in for Ridge at fullback and also proved to be an accurate goal-kicker, propelling Manly to fourth place and a finals berth, where they were defeated 4-16 by the Brisbane Broncos in the Qualifying Final.
