The former president John Dramani Mahama has given further explanations on reasons for cancelling Teacher Trainees allowances in the Colleges of Education during his government as president.
John Dramani Mahama who was speaking in an interview with Paul Adom Otchere on Good Evening Ghana programme said, the decision to UPGRADE colleges of education to tertiary status required that just like all other tertiary institutions, the teacher trainees are also migrated from receiving allowances to students’ loans.

According to him, the allowance was not arbitrarily cancelled but has been substituted with Students Loan and feeding grant of Gh560.00 per a trainee for the purposes of equity to all tertiary students in Ghana.
The Leader and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress suggests that, his visionary policy saw an immediate jump in enrollment from 27% to 63.8% under Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Education Minister. This aimed at ensuring EQUITY, IMPROVING & EXPANDING CAPACITY which was achieved by allowing more intake into the Colleges of Education in Ghana.

Mr. John Mahama further argued that, his decision was to maintain direct employment for teachers who successfully complete Colleges of Education into the Ghanaian classroom.
