John Mahama pledges to repair Free SHS and NHIS policies if elected President in 2024

John Dramani Mahama, a presidential hopeful for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, has promised to review and repair two major government policies if elected as President in the 2024 elections. Mahama aims to address the challenges associated with the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which have negatively affected Ghanaians.

Speaking at a campaign tour in Kongo, in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, Mahama pledged to improve the quality of education and end the challenges associated with the Free SHS policy. He noted that “the policy has failed to benefit parents and has negatively impacted the quality of education in various senior high schools”.

Mahama promised to repair and make the Free SHS policy better, ensuring that all children can attend school together and return home together. He also highlighted that the amount spent on educating children under the policy is much higher than when school fees were paid.

Mahama further reiterated his call for the resignation of the Health Minister over the collapse of the NHIS. He noted that the NHIS has been completely destroyed, and the Minister himself has said that there are no benefits to the NHIS card. He pledged to make the NHIS better if the NDC wins the 2024 elections.
