John Mahama vows to slash Hajj pilgrimage cost from GH¢75,000 to affordable cost to help regular Muslims embark on their spiritual journey

Former President and 2024 flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has vowed to slash the cost of the Hajj pilgrimage from GH¢75,000 (the current cost) to an affordable cost to help regular Muslims embark on their spiritual journey.

According to the former president, the cost of the Hajj pilgrimage has pushed away regular Muslims from embarking on their spiritual journey. He added that under his reign, Hajj fares were much more affordable at GH¢11,900.00 but under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government, the fare has skyrocketed which in the long run is denying Muslims to embark on their spiritual journey.

“The current cost of the Hajj pilgrimage is undeniably a significant financial burden, making it challenging for many regular Muslims to embark on this spiritual journey.

“During my time as President, Hajj fares were much more affordable at GH¢11,900.00. Seeing the cost rise to GH¢75,000.00 is disheartening, leaving many with no option but to seek alternative routes for their pilgrimage.

Mr. Mahama made it clear that he understands the significance of the Hajj pilgrimage, therefore, he will work tirelessly to bring a travelling smile to many Muslims when voted into power come 2024 General Elections.

“I fully understand the significance of the Hajj pilgrimage and the importance of making it accessible to all.”

On Sunday, June 16, 2024, when John Mahama joined the Ahlussuna Wal-Jamah group for their Eid prayers, he stated that when given the opportunity to lead Ghana once again, he “will not only work tirelessly but also strategically to make the Hajj pilgrimage more affordable for the Ghanaian Muslim community, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
