Jorge Vilda Rodrguez is a Spanish football coach who holds a UEFA Pro Licence. From 2015 to 2023, he was the head coach of Spain’s women’s national football team, winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. For most of the same time, he was also the sporting director of the Spanish FA’s (RFEF) women’s national team system and a tactical lecturer at their National Coaching School. As part of the Rubiales scandal, he was sacked from all positions on September 5, 2023.
A feud erupted in 2022 between Vilda and 15 Spanish players who boycotted the national squad. The disagreement emerged as a result of the players’ disappointment with the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 result, as well as their worries about Vilda’s coaching style and treatment of players.
The Federation backed Vilda, who refused to quit and did not utilize those players in the subsequent matches. Only three of them returned to the national squad and competed in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Aitana Bonmat, Mariona Caldentey, and Ona Batlle.
