Ken Paxton Biography
Warren Kenneth Paxton Jr. is a politician and lawyer from the United States. He has been the Attorney General of Texas since January 2015 but has been suspended since May 27, 2023, due to his impeachment by the Texas House of Representatives.
Paxton has been indicted on state securities fraud charges relating to acts previous to taking office in 2015. He has entered a not-guilty plea.
The case has yet to go to trial due to procedural difficulties. In October 2020, several high-level staffers in Paxton’s office accused him of “bribery, abuse of office, and other crimes.” He is awaiting trial in the Texas Senate.
He formerly served as Texas State Senator for the 8th district and Texas State Representative for the 70th district. Paxton rose to power as a Tea Party supporter. He was elected to a third term as Attorney General in 2022.
Paxton was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives in May 2023 by a vote of 121-23.
The articles of impeachment alleged that Paxton gave preferential treatment to a political donor who bribed him, misused public resources and made false statements against whistleblowers, obstructed justice in his securities fraud trial, and made false statements about his financial interests.
The Republican-led Texas House General Investigating Committee had unanimously recommended impeachment and presented articles of impeachment two days earlier.
