What are the uses of BEd, MPhil, and PhD in Ghana? Education levels vary therefore, there are specified requirements /or qualifications that one has to have before the government can employ them to teach at any of the educational levels in the country.
Teaching qualifications by educational levels in Ghana are different. Currently, in Ghana, the minimum qualification one has to hold before she/he can teach at the Basic Level (Primary & Junior High School) is a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in primary education or a specific subject area for JHS.
The requirement goes on through to the topmost qualification/ranking.
Let’s walk through all the levels of education and their respective qualifications/or requirements. In other words, let’s walk through what qualifies one to teach at any of the educational levels in Ghana.
Level Teaching Requirements Hierarchy in Ghana: Teaching Qualifications by Educational Levels in Ghana
1. Basic Level (Primary & Junior High School)
Minimum Qualification: Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in primary education or a specific subject area for JHS.
– Alternative that recently became obsolete: Diploma in Basic Education (DBE).
2. Senior High School (SHS)/Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
Minimum Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in secondary education with specialization in a specific subject area being taught at the senior high school.
3. Colleges of Education
Minimum Qualification: Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a subject area related to your first degree.
– Example: B.Ed in Information Technology to MPhil/PhD in Information Technology or ICT.
4. Universities/Technical Universities
Minimum Qualification: MPhil or PhD in a specific subject area.
Note: The advanced degree does not necessarily need to be in the same subject but same subject area as the first degree.
– Example: B.Ed/BSc in Accounting can lead to an MPhil/PhD in Finance, Management, Marketing, Human Resource, or Procurement and Supply Chain.
Additional Requirement: Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is needed if the applicant does not have an education background.

– Specialization: At higher levels, specialization can shift to related fields of specialization.
– Flexibility: Universities and technical universities allow more flexibility in subject area transitions between degrees.
– Education Background: For university-level teaching, a PGDE is required for those without a prior education-focused degree.

“What about educational psychology, For example, if one didn’t offer psychology as his first degree but did educational psychology in MPHIL and PhD can one lecture at the University?”
In other words, the same question can be interpreted as “Can an individual with a Master’s or PhD in Educational Psychology, but without a first degree in Psychology, lecture at the University level in Ghana?”
Response: “There are subfields of psychology. Examples include clinical psychology, counseling psychology, organizational psychology, social psychology, etc. Similarly, educational psychology is one of these subfields.
Therefore, if you hold a Bachelor’s degree in Educational Psychology, you are within the domain of psychology and can pursue an M.A, MPhil, or PhD in either the same subfield or shift to other subfields or pure psychology. These are considered linear in most cases unless the university requiring your service states otherwise for reasons best known to them.”
Does College of Education employ MSc holders? What about MSc for CoE?
M.Sc is at the same level as M.A and M.Ed though some have research background. The current standard is M.Phil. The only area where M.Sc is accepted mostly in college is ICT or IT or CS.
