Who qualifies to teach in Colleges of Education in Ghana? Who qualifies to tutor in Colleges of Education in Ghana?

According to the Qualifications for Appointments clause of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) document “Criteria For Appointments and Promotions of Senior Members (2021)”, the requirements for who qualifies to teach in Colleges of Education have been detailed.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENTS

2.1. Assistant Lecturer/ Assistant Research Fellow

2.1.1. In special cases, a candidate with M.Phil, or research-based MBA/MPA or any equivalent qualification may be considered. A candidate appointed under such conditions must take steps to obtain a Ph.D. at least six years after appointment before he/she may be considered for upgrading to the next higher rank of Lecturer. Candidates who fail to move to the next rank will not be eligible to apply for renewal of contract appointment.

What are Colleges of Education in Ghana?

Colleges of Education (CoE) in Ghana are specialized institutions that are mandated to equip students with the knowledge and the needed requisite skills to handle learners in Basic schools collectively. Students from these institutions after their programme will become professional teachers /or facilitators after graduation and fulfilling all the requirements they must have not excluding sitting and passing their NTC GTLE papers to qualify for a teaching license.

What certificate is awarded in Colleges of Education?

In Ghana, Colleges of Education (CoE) award Degree certificates (4-year B.Ed programme) to students under the new structure (starting from the 2018/2019 academic year). Before the introduction of a Degree in CoE, graduates were awarded a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE).

Due to the introduction of the 4-year Degree programme in CoE in 2018, the first batch of graduates from this new system graduated and was awarded a Degree certificate in 2022.

What is the requirement for Tutors in Colleges of Education?

During the Diploma era in Colleges of Education, MPhil was the requirement. In other words, when Colleges were training teachers for Diploma MPhil was the requirement for Tutors to teach there. However, after the upgrade to Degree awarding institutions, the statute has not been reviewed (as of May 2024).

What provision was made for Tutors teaching with in College before the transition?

Tutors teaching/tutoring in the accredited 46 Colleges of Education in Ghana after the introduction of the 4-year Degree programme were instructed to upgrade.

Those who were teaching before the transition (Diploma awarding to Degree awarding) were asked to upgrade within a certain period in order to stay in work. Due to that, the majority of college tutors started upgrading themselves to meet the new requirements.

Currently, any new person who wants to teach in Colleges of Education in Ghana will not be brought under the old statute (MPhil qualification). Amendments are underway for the requirements to tutor /or teach in Colleges of Education (CoE) in Ghana.
