Accomodation crisis: Colleges of Education directs Final Year trainees to find their own accomodation

The accredited forty-six (46) Colleges of Education (CoE) in Ghana have directed all Final year students in the various public colleges of education are to find their own accommodations for the Second Semester of the 2023/2024 academic year.
This new development became necessary because the Colleges of Education are facing deficit in accomodation making it difficult to contain all the four (4) batches on campus at a go.
Before the first batch (2018) of Degree graduates from CoE completed in 2022, they run a shift due to the deficit in accomodation but till date (2024), proper measures have not been put in place to address the challenge the 4-year B.Ed programme came with.
Since 2020, all the Colleges of Education (CoE) have been running shift, but the shift system has been abolished during the 2023/2024 academic year.
In CoE currently, the system /or policy implemented for use is the In-In-In-Out residential policy. This policy simply mean Teacher Trainees from Level 100 to Level 300 would reside on campus while final year students stay off campus and commute for lectures.
The new policy has pushed the Final Year (Level 400) Teacher Trainees to find their own accommodation in order to complete the Second Semester in their last academic year, 2023/2024.
As it stands, the Final Year (Level 400) Teacher Trainees are left with few weeks left to commence their Second Semester. Already, they are done with their Macro teaching (Out programme) using the First Semester.

The new policy has brought a lot of pressure to some Final Year trainees. Majority of them are yet to find accommodations for their last Semester.
Those who have secured the accomodation in town are being asked to pay high rental fees by their landlords even though them will stay there for less than six (6) months.
This challenge out there is causing a significant financial burden for the Final Year Teacher trainees. It has made most of them to be worried about how their lives and studies will be affected since the places they managed to secure accommodations are quite far from their colleges.
It is worth noting that, the government had earlier promised to complete a 300-bed capacity hostels across all the colleges to address these issues, but many of these projects remain unfinished or have not even started in several colleges of education.
