Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy is currently on trial at Chester Crown Court, facing charges of rape and attempted rape.

The jury, consisting of six women and six men, has been instructed by trial Judge Stephen Everett to focus solely on the evidence presented in court and not to seek information about previous trials or media coverage.

Mendy had previously been found not guilty of sexual offences alleged by other women in a trial that concluded earlier this year.

The prosecution alleges that Mendy, 28 years old at the time, attacked a 24-year-old woman at his £4m mansion in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, in October 2020. Additionally, he is accused of attempting to rape another woman, aged 29 at the time, two years prior to the alleged incident. Mendy denies both charges.

In his opening statement, Benjamin Aina KC, representing the prosecution, outlined the case against Mendy. The court heard that Mendy, who would host parties and social gatherings at his home, The Spinney, in Mottram St Andrew, would invite both male and female guests.

The prosecution alleges that Mendy took advantage of two of his female guests on separate occasions.

The first incident involves a UK student, referred to as woman A, whom Mendy met in a nightclub in Barcelona in late 2017. They remained in contact, and a year later, she visited Mendy’s house with a friend after a night out.

The following morning, while woman A was showering in the ensuite bathroom, Mendy allegedly entered the room uninvited, wearing only boxer shorts and appearing aroused. He is accused of attempting to rape her on the bed, despite her protests and pleas for him to stop.

The second incident involves woman B, who was out with friends at a bar near Mendy’s home when they received an invitation to his house. Woman B alleges that Mendy took her phone, which contained intimate photos, and led her to his locked bedroom when she asked for it back.

Mendy reportedly told her to undress and threw her phone onto the bed. As she reached for her phone, Mendy allegedly raped her from behind, despite her expressed refusal to engage in sexual activity. It is claimed that Mendy then stepped back and remarked, “You’re too shy. It’s fine. I’ve had sex with 10,000 women.”

Mendy asserts that any sexual contact that occurred on both occasions was consensual and denies any wrongdoing. The trial is ongoing.
