Military should not be included in Core Security Taskforce for 2024 Elections

According to Security Analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa, the military should not be part of the primary security task force for the 2024 general elections. Instead, they should be on standby to provide support if necessary

“They should not be part of the core tasksforce for the elections, they should be on standby,” he said on the Big Issue on TV3 Tuesday April 18.

Dr. Bonaa commented on the meeting held on Monday by the Police with the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Inspector-General of Police called the meeting after the parties issued press statements and filed petitions to the Police Service, with each party calling for the arrest of certain individuals on the other side for alleged offenses.

During the meeting, both parties were given an opportunity to voice their grievances, with the main issue being inflammatory comments made by some political figures from both sides. The Police advised the NDC and NPP leaders not to interfere with their duties.

Following a meeting with the leadership of both parties, the Police released a statement urging them to allow the Police to carry out their duties of policing while they focus on their political activities. The Police requested the parties’ support, including constructive criticism to enable them to execute their constitutional mandate in a professional manner.

While we acknowledge and appreciate the leadership of the two political parties for their participation in the meeting and their contributions towards its success, we urge Ghanaians to support our endeavor to establish an independent Police service that will prioritize the greater good of the Ghanaian people instead of the interests of any individual or group.

The statement affirmed the Police’s unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, security, and law and order in the country at all times, including before, during, and after all elections.
