Minister of Education Backs UEW’s Ambition to Become a World-Leading Institution for Teacher Education

In an exclusive meeting with the UEW board, the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, expressed great optimism for the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to establish itself as a leading global hub for teacher education. Following a closed-door meeting with the university’s management in Accra on December 4th, 2023, the Minister highlighted UEW’s strong foundation and unveiled plans that could catapult the institution to international acclaim.
During the meeting, the Chancellor, Neenyi Ghartey VII, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, presented a strategic roadmap for transforming UEW into the world’s foremost institution for teacher education. Hon. Dr. Adutwum wholeheartedly supported the outlined initiatives, drawing parallels with prestigious institutions such as Columbia and Teachers College.
“I am committed to working closely with the university. The leadership has presented to me some of their ambitious plans, and I fully support them. I believe that UEW has the potential to become the world’s best university for education, just like Columbia and Teachers College,” said the Education Minister.
Also, expressing his unwavering confidence in the current Vice-Chancellor, Chancellor, and the dedicated management team, Hon. Dr. Adutwum emphasized their collective responsibility in propelling UEW to global prominence. He stated, “The only thing that can prevent us from becoming the best is ourselves. So, I have complete faith in the current leadership of UEW. I have high expectations for them.”
In addition, the Education Minister encouraged the University Management to actively contribute to the local community, particularly in the transformation of Effutu, ensuring that the residents benefit from the presence of the university. Hon. Dr. Adutwum reiterated his commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance educational opportunities for the community and anticipated proposals for uplifting the university’s fortunes.
The Minister charged the Vice-Chancellor with fostering unity and harmony among staff and stakeholders, emphasizing the need for a shared vision for UEW’s future. “I have urged the Vice-Chancellor to strive for unity within the university. There should be no factions. The only faction that should exist is UEW itself, and its future should guide us all,” Hon. Dr. Adutwum advised .
