National food suppliers association threatens legal action over unpaid arrears by government

The National Food Suppliers Association has issued a stern warning that it will pursue legal action if the government fails to settle the two-year outstanding arrears owed to its members by Friday, June 16.

Commencing on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the association plans to stage a series of picketing activities at the premises of the National Food Buffer Stock Company as a strategic move to compel the settlement of the arrears.

Despite numerous attempts to engage the government and secure payment of the over GH¢200 million owed to its members, the association laments that all efforts have been in vain, leading to the decision to escalate their action by picketing at the National Buffer Stock Company’s office.

Kwaku Amedume, spokesperson for the association, expressed the members’ collective resolve not to be swayed any longer by empty promises from the government.

He emphasized that the value of the money owed has significantly depreciated over the period, necessitating the need for legal intervention to ensure justice is served.

“We will be proceeding to court because the money we are owed by the government is without interest, and it has been pending for two years. If we pursue legal action, we will be seeking interest on our money, considering the substantial expenses we have incurred to recover these funds. Our lawyers will also seek damages and compensation, in accordance with what they deem appropriate.” Amedume said.
