Needy but brilliant graduate abandons education for Galamsey due to financial constraints

Koomson Stephen, a brilliant graduate of Mpohor SHS in the Western Region, has abandoned his education due to financial constraints and other circumstances beyond his control.

Koomson, who obtained 5As and 3Bs in his WASSCE in 2021, has resorted to doing menial jobs, including artisanal mining (popularly known as ‘galamsey’) to survive and support his younger siblings.

The talented student’s story is one of many in Ghana, where poverty and lack of access to education continue to hinder the development of the country.

Koomson’s situation is particularly heartbreaking as his academic achievements show that he has the potential to make a significant contribution to society.
