New Malware discovered in WhatsApp and Telegram modifications for android devices
Cybersecurity researchers from Kaspersky, a renowned multinational company, have uncovered the presence of modified versions of WhatsApp and Telegram for Android devices. These modifications contain a malicious software known as CarnesSpy, which is coded in Arabic and Azerbaijani, raising concerns about the security of millions of users.
According to reports, these altered versions of the popular messaging apps are specifically designed to activate a spyware module once the phone is switched on or begins charging. Once activated, the malware establishes contact with a remote server, enabling it to pilfer sensitive information from the victim’s device. Notably,
CarnesSpy has the capability to extract crucial details such as the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), phone number, mobile country code, mobile network code, and information about the victim’s contacts and accounts. Shockingly, this data is stolen every five minutes, posing a significant threat to users’ privacy and security.
Amidst these alarming findings, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has taken legal action against three developers based in China and Taiwan. The lawsuit has been filed against these developers for distributing unofficial WhatsApp applications, including HeyMods, which have compromised over one million user accounts.
This move by Meta demonstrates the company’s commitment to safeguarding its user base and holding accountable those responsible for compromising users’ security.
